Ajijic is a paradise for those looking for stunning beauty, tropical breezes by a lake, and the proverbial laid-back living of a quaint, authentic Mexican village. You’ll want to make sure you bring your camera to photograph the local flavour and the breathtaking scenery, including the abundance of bird life. It’s a bird watcher’s paradise!

Ajijic is a friendly village, where native artisans mix with visitors from diverse corners of the world, and the cost of living is still reasonable. Discover the pleasures of this quaint, charming town, with its cobblestone streets, many of which were laid during the days of Spanish rule around 1523 A.D. Sensible footwear is definitely a must!

Walk down any street and encounter cascades of flowers gracing stone walls that hide magnificent homes - you never know what you may find until you "peek behind the walls".

Located in the state of Jalisco, on the northern shore of Lake Chapala (the largest lake in Mexico), Ajijic (pronounced Ah-Hee-Heek) is located 40 minutes south of the Guadalajara International Airport. The village is approximately 5000 feet above sea level, nestled in the large central plateau that is home to the Sierra Madre mountain range. Due to the area's tropical latitude, the sun is warm year-round, but with its relatively high elevation, it’s seldom unpleasantly hot or humid. Overall, there is very little temperature variation year-round: typical daytime highs range from 24ºC/75ºF in January to 33ºC/90ºF in May. Typical nighttime lows range from 7ºC/45ºF in January to 16ºC/61ºF in June.

The rainy season generally begins in June and lasts until the beginning of October, with an average rainfall of approximately 864mm/34in. December and January are the coolest months and May is the hottest and driest, just before the onset of the rainy season. The rainy season is idyllic, usually raining during the night, leaving the skies (and air) fresh and clear during the day.

Thousands of retirees from the United States, Canada and many other parts of the world, live here either full or part-time, with numbers increasing annually. Many from "north of the border" escape the winter doldrums, or the extreme southern heat. Winters here are warm and glorious - a haven from northern winter snow and ice storms. Summers are enchanting - comfortably warm, fresh & green – a delightful and relaxing respite for visitors from the southern states - Arizona, Texas, Mississippi and Florida - where summers can be stifling.
Ajijic is a perfect place to be at any time of year. The friendly, Mexican days stretch out long and lazy and the soft nights are enchanting. There’s always enough time here to do everything - or nothing. After all, sometimes being here is less about “doing” and more about just “being” in this magical place. Creating your own reality here is beyond easy. It’s Ajijic - Mexico at its best.
